The Devil Wears Prada is one of my absolute favorite movies and this year it’s turning 10. Yes, the movie about the girl with the job a million girls would kill for has been out for a whole decade. So I thought I would break down my 5 reasons Andy(Anne Hathaway) shouldn’t give a damn about not skipping Paris to spare Emily’s feelings.
Cinematically, the moment Andy flings it all away at Place de la Concorde puts on a button on Andy’s growth and blah blah blah. However, I still don’t like it. Andy should feel bad about Nigel(Stanley Tucci), but she shouldn’t care about Emily and here’s why.
Emily was in the hospital.
Someone was going to have to go to Paris and it wasn’t going to be Emily. And let’s say she’s miraculously released, there’s no way she was going to use her crutches around Paris and have Miranda be sympathetic to her. It’s not that she couldn’t do the job. Miranda showed time and time again that valid reasons or mistakes were no excuse for falling short.
Andy showed up and showed out while Emily declined.
Emily got sick and while that’s not the worst thing that can happen to someone, it’s definitely not a good thing when you have a demanding boss. That sickness put Andy in a position to rise to the occasion and save Miranda from being embarrassed when Emily forgot a name at the party.
Once aware of her shortcomings Andy excelled.
This is a movie of course, but in a matter of months she embraced the culture of Runway and that helped her get off Miranda’s shit list.
BECAUSE IT’S PARIS!!!
I want you to know I’m clapping on every syllable too. I mean c’mon! It’s a free trip to Paris! Considering Andy’s parents were helping her with rent, when would she be able to go on a trip like this on her own? And she’s supposed to give it up for Emily? Tuh!
Emily wasn’t her friend.
Emily was about herself. That’s not criticism, it’s just a statement. She did what she had to do to keep Andy in line to not jeopardize her chances of going to Paris. Emily did not help Andy learn what she needed to learn to do a better job. She also showed she was a hater when Andy started to look better. Obviously, Andy didn’t take that stuff personally, but she didn’t owe Emily any loyalty either.
