Drugstores Are Your Friend
With some exceptions, just about everything you need to get your feet wet when it comes to makeup is at your local Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart, Duane Reade, whatever. You might see $20, $40, $60 and say to yourself good makeup is out of your reach but it’s not. Brands like Milani, Black Radiance, Revlon, Maybelline, Black Opal, L’oreal and others are waiting for you. They go on sale regularly too so you can get more bang for your buck.
You Gotta Crawl Before You Walk
Cut creases. Contouring. Cooking. Baking. That is not your ministry. You should focus on what colors catch your eye. You should focus on what makes you jump back and why. Is it because you really don’t like the color or is it because of what SOMEONE SAID? Basic things like blending are what can make or break a look, so don’t jump into advanced things too soon.
Play Up Your Favorite Feature
Do you have super long lashes? Expressive eyes? Full lips? Smooth skin? If there’s something you really like about your face start there. When you master what works in that area you can begin to build looks around that feature. Starting in one spot can temper any overwhelming feelings about trying makeup. You can cross the bridge to blush when you come to it because right now you’re focused on eyeshadow.
Good Lighting Is Half The Battle
You gotta be able to see if what’s you’re putting on your face is working so make sure you’re in a bright room. Natural light is best so put that mirror in front a window and go to work. However, if you don’t have a lot natural light, daylight bulbs are great. Look for a bulb that has a color temperature of 5000K or higher because it simulates daylight.
Brows Are The Cheat Code
A face is most together when the brows are groomed, shaped, and if needed, filled in. Brows frame the face. It’s possible to get by with a good brow, some mascara, and a gloss or lipstick. So even if your dream is to be beat for the gawds you still need a good brow to set it off.
